Adenoidectomy (removal of adenoids/pharyngeal tonsils)
Pharyngeal tonsil – 3rd tonsil localized in nasopharynx. The tonsil can be visualized during pharyngeal exam with mirror or fiberoptic endoscopic exam.
Indications:
- Snoring, obstructive sleep apnea,
- breathing through mouth, adenoidal facies
- recurrent upper respiratory infections in pre-school and early-school children
- recurrent acute otitis or serous otitis
- conductive hearing loss
- disturbance of articulation (“hot potato voice”)
The procedure performed is with general endotracheal anesthesia
Treatment effects: Restoration of proper respiratory airflow through the nose, along with proper air conduction through Eustachian tube, and the middle ear – hearing improvement. Full recuperation after the procedure is fast. Few days after the procedure child should avoid any type of physical effort.
